Dr. J. Waid Blackstone is a devoted ophthalmologist serving Pell City, Sylacauga and Talladega and surrounding communities. Dr. Blackstone's journey into medicine began at Birmingham Southern College, where he excelled academically and athletically, earning a bachelor’s degree in biology, graduating Magna cum Laude, and earning a place in Phi Beta Kappa. A lifelong soccer enthusiast, he attended Birmingham-Southern on a soccer scholarship and was twice named an Academic All-American.

Priscilla Fowler, MD is a board certified, fellowship trained ophthalmologist specializing in comprehensive eye care including routine eye exams and surgical eye care. Dr. Fowler completed fellowship training in advanced corneal and cataract surgery, management of corneal infections, and ocular surface diseases.
Dr. Fowler is a native of Birmingham, AL. She received her undergraduate degree from Smith College and the University of Virginia. She completed her undergraduate medical education at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. She then went on to pursue her residency training in Ophthalmology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she served as Chief Resident. After residency, Dr. Fowler moved to Destin, Florida and opened Destin Ophthalmology where she successfully practiced solo, comprehensive ophthalmology for nearly 8 years. As Dr. Fowler’s interests changed, she decided to leave practice to pursue fellowship training in Cornea and External Disease and was accepted at the prestigious Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia, PA. After completing her corneal fellowship, Dr. Fowler came home to Birmingham in 2012 to join the faculty of the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. During her time at UAB, Dr. Fowler has risen in the ranks to Associate Professor and served as Director of the Cornea Service. In 2015, Dr. Fowler created and directed the UAB Ocular Surface and Dry Eye Disease Clinic which has helped thousands of patients suffering from this debilitating condition. While being actively involved in full time clinical practice, she has also participated in research and the education of the next generation of Ophthalmologists as part of the teaching faculty. Dr. Fowler specializes in performing state-of-the-art corneal surgeries including full thickness corneal transplantation, partial thickness endothelial keratoplasty, and lamellar keratoplasties. She has expertise in collagen crosslinking for the management of keratoconus and post-LASIK ectasia. As a corneal specialist, she also treats corneal infections, corneal dystrophies, dry eye syndrome, and other diseases of the cornea and external eye. Dr. James C. Rains Jr. was born in Richmond Indiana. When he was eight, the family moved to Northwest Florida. As the son of a Methodist minister, he lived in numerous locations in Florida, Alabama, and Tennessee. After graduating from high school in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1962, he attended Huntington College in Montgomery, Alabama. There, he received a Bachelor of Science with a major in chemistry. Dr. Rains pursued his medical degree at the medical College of Alabama – University of Alabama at Birmingham, completing his training in 1970.
He then served one year internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. From 1970 to 1972 Dr. Rains practiced family medicine in Bessemer, Alabama. In 1993 he entered the ophthalmology residency program at what is now UAB Callahan Eye Hospital, completing his training in 1976. That same year, Dr. Rains opened his practice of general ophthalmology Bessemer, Alabama, where he continues to practice today.
Dr. Rains is married to his wife of 57 years, Brenda Rains. Together they have two children: Christopher Rains, an attorney, and Amanda Rains, a veterinarian. In his spare time Dr. Rains enjoys golf, camping, and gardening.
BessemerLindsay Rhodes, MD
Lindsay A. Rhodes, MD, MSPH grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada in a family that valued caring for the health and well-being of others. During her college years at Brown University, she was on the Women’s Crew team, studied abroad in Italy, and received her undergraduate degree in Biology with Honors. In deciding whether to pursue a career in government, she worked in Washington, DC for US Senator Harry Reid for 2 years. After being frustrated by the slow pace of government action, she returned to her passion for science and helping people on an individual basis by earning her medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. During medical school, she realized that maximizing a person’s quality of life is an important goal of the medical profession and ophthalmology is a field that aims to do exactly that. Dr. Rhodes then moved to the South to complete her ophthalmology residency and fellowship training in the clinical and surgical care of glaucoma at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She met her husband in Birmingham and decided to begin her practice as a comprehensive ophthalmologist and glaucoma subspecialist providing clinical and surgical care of cataracts and glaucoma at UAB.
Dr. Rhodes spent nearly a decade on faculty as an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at UAB where she worked as a clinician-scientist and taught ophthalmology residents and glaucoma fellows. Her public health research explored and developed novel methods of health-care delivery, such as telemedicine, to efficiently and effectively increase access to care and prevent blindness. She has been federally funded in the field of health outcomes through a Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development K23 Award from the National Institutes of Health. She was also the Principal Investigator of a five-year, $3.5 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study innovative strategies to detect and manage glaucoma and other eye diseases in rural, community-based settings using telemedicine. She oversaw the implementation of telemedicine programs for the detection of glaucoma and other eye diseases using a variety of clinical imaging devices. Dr. Rhodes has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and conference abstracts and has been an invited speaker at national and international conferences.
Dr. Rhodes enjoys spending time outdoors with her supportive husband, two children, and two dogs. She and her family love hiking, biking, paddleboarding, and cross-country skiing. Fun fact, Dr. Rhodes grew up riding horses and watching rodeo which led her to be a Wrangler on a ranch in Wyoming prior to medical school.

Dr. Carol Rosenstiel joined the faculty in the UAB Department of Ophthalmology in 1992 and served as the director of the contact lens service and professor of ophthalmology until her retirement from UAB. She is excited about the collaboration with thirteen of her colleagues at TriaVision and will continue to her roles in ophthalmology residency education.
Dr. Rosenstiel is a primary eye care practitioner with an emphasis in contact lenses. She treats patients with a variety of complex conditions that require custom contact lenses. Dr. Rosenstiel has more than 30 years' experience fitting scleral, rigid gas permeable, multi focal, and astigmatic contact lenses. Dr. Rosenstiel's expertise includes treating patients with keratoconus, ocular trauma, corneal transplants, dry eye conditions, aphakia, and other medical conditions that require contact lens treatment.
She is an active member of the American Optometric Association and a fellow of the Academy of Optometry.
Dr. Rosenstiel was an investigator in the 10-year Collaborative Longitudinal Evaluation of Keratoconus study, which characterized the progression of keratoconus over a broad spectrum of disease severity.
