Q&A with Dr. Knox: Glaucoma Insights
Q: What is glaucoma, and who is at risk?
A: Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve, often due to increased eye pressure. Risk factors include age, family history, certain medical conditions like diabetes, and sometimes race. Regular eye exams are essential for early detection.
Q: Are there any common misconceptions about glaucoma?
A: Many people think glaucoma always causes symptoms early on, but it often develops silently. That’s why routine eye exams are critical. Another myth is that surgery is the only option—there are many medical and minimally invasive treatments available.
Q: What can patients do to protect their vision?
A: Stay consistent with eye exams, follow treatment plans, manage systemic health issues, and communicate openly with your eye care provider about any changes in vision.
