Protecting Your Vision: Firework Safety Tips for the 4th of July

houseEmily Williamson Jul 3, 2025

The Fourth of July is a time for celebration—cookouts, family gatherings, and of course, fireworks. But as beautiful as they are to watch, fireworks can pose serious risks to your eyes if not handled with care. At TriaVision, we want you to enjoy every spark and shimmer of the holiday safely, while also protecting your most important sense: your sight.

Why Firework Eye Safety Matters

Each year, thousands of firework-related injuries are reported—and nearly 15% of them involve the eyes. From burns and corneal abrasions to serious trauma, even a small spark can cause long-term damage.

Simple Ways to Keep Your Eyes Safe

Leave it to the pros

Attend public fireworks displays instead of lighting them yourself. Professional shows are safer and just as spectacular. Plus, you can sit back and enjoy them worry-free!

Keep your distance

If you’re around fireworks, stay at least 500 feet away from where they’re being launched. And don’t let children near any fireworks...yes, even sparklers! (They can burn at over 1,000°F.)

Protective eyewear

If you're lighting fireworks at home, wear protective goggles and not just sunglasses. Safety glasses can help prevent sparks or debris from causing injury.

No peeking

Never look directly over a firework that didn't ignite. It may still explode and send debris into your face and eyes.

Have water nearby

In case of fire or malfunction, having a bucket of water or hose close by can prevent accidents from escalating.

Your eyes are delicate and incredibly important—treat them with the care they deserve.

Wishing You a Safe & Happy Independence Day!

“As we celebrate the Fourth of July, it’s critical to prioritize eye safety—especially around fireworks. Even small, handheld sparklers burn at high temperatures and can cause serious eye injuries in seconds. Protect your vision by enjoying fireworks from a safe distance and wearing protective eyewear when needed,” says Dr. Carrie Smith, optometrist at TriaVision.

From all of us at TriaVision, we hope you have a safe, festive, and bright 4th of July. Enjoy the celebrations, but remember: protecting your eyes is always in style.
